I had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Huff and members of the community thoughts on the recent audit. Roughly 30 people made up of community, administration, school board members came out tonight. Dr. Huff started by stating that he was proud of the fair assessment from the audit. According to his information we are one of eleven schools to be audited in the state in the past four years. We are one of nine schools who have rated fair. One above us at good and one below us at poor.
Anson Burlingame, an editorial writer for The Joplin Globe, spoke on many of the points either brought up by himself or others. Areas brought up included, school fund balance, Sunshine Law compliance, student achievement and retention, 14.5 million "loan", super TIFF, and book keeping for school stores.
In essences, the audit brought about procedural changes and improvements. Yes, much can be improved. Much will improve when a process is in place to make sure the checks and balances are maintained. Right now, the audit has told Joplin Schools officials that we need to improve both book keeping journals and student achievement. I will link the Joplin Schools page responses below with how the district plans to improve from the recommendations of the audit. http://www.joplinschools.org//site/Default.aspx?PageID=1766
Those of you reading this most likely know that JNEA is in a campaign for collective bargaining. And have heard, or read, how if the process is followed, all parties will have a fair, and balanced experience. Many teachers are asking me to seek an answer to the teacher salary fund. The upcoming years budget is not out yet. We will know information of how the state funding will pan out by April (hopefully) and at our meeting with Dr. Huff will have some answer to what the salary schedule will look like for the upcoming year. However, when JNEA becomes the bargaining unit representative, we (the group bargaining) can see the fund details and negotiate with full knowledge of how the fund is looking and should we ask for a raise or not to help our district and JS teachers. Different from what we know now but we are reaching our goal and are sooo close to representing ALL of Joplin teachers.
