Tina Smith began the meeting with discussing the Friday PD day. She said that it should last around an hour. The plan is to discuss results of the survey given to staff last May. Dr. Huff will also address all staff and discuss district’s vision. Jason Cravens came in and showed the school calendar for 15-16, one of the changes will be for MLK Jr. Day will be a PD. JNEA asked the question why is President’s Day not another PD day. Cravens will be looking into this. A JNEA Member asked, and in turn I asked, why did the district take the half days out of the calendar this year. Huff took this question,he said it made it hard for parents to find half day care. It also made a strain on small businesses to have employees gone on the half day. The Board of Education should hear the recommendations to the calendar at the Tuesday, February 24th BOE meeting and possibly approve at the same time,
The conversation then continued to an update from Dr. Huff regarding the Super TIFF and the impact on our district funds. He talked about the half a million dollar loss to our district from the agreement of the Super TIFF. He also said that due to a “maneuver” from the Joplin Board of Education in August 2014, the district look into a possible levy in the upcoming year.
Dr. Huff also talked about the struggles of the district when coming up on the budget for next school year and the possible changes to the foundation formula and hold harmless district versus non hold harmless districts. The district will know about state funding for our budget hopefully by the end of April.
Overall the meeting lasted around an hour. Thank you to the members who sent me questions, I encourage you to continue to send those to me by my personal email or text.
